Barbaresco vineyard map
TAVERNA’s vineyards are all located inside the Barbaresco DOCG area and within only one of the four villages that make the denomination – Neive (the biggest village in terms of population, vineyard area and number of wineries and MGA). All of the vineyard plots are inside an MGA (see the map to the left).
Taverna has 6 vineyard plots: 4 of them in Cottà MGA (2.3 ha roughly), 1 in Gaia-Principe MGA (1.8 ha) and 1 in Marcorino MGA (0.75 ha). Despite the similarities of the soils (sandy-clayy with moderate lime content) and more or less the same altitude above sea level, the plots hugely differ between each other, mainly because of their exposition, of the variety of and the age of the vines.
(1) Gaia-Peincipe MGA (230 – 250 m. a.s.l.) our oldest Nebbiolo vineyard was planted in 1968 on the top of the Gaia-Principe hill, in an area called Slizza. In 1970 and 1999 the other two Nebbiolo vineyards were replanted and they are facing East-North-East. Chardonnay was palnted in 1985 (second oldest vineyard in the Langhe), facing North-North-West, and also Arneis and Muscat. A total of 1.22 ha of Taverna’s Nebbiolo for Barbaresco has a Gaia-Principe MGA designation.
(2) Marcorino MGA (250 – 270 m. a.s.l.) one of our youngest Nebbiolo vineyards (planted in 2016) and the last to get a Barbaresco DOCG designation in 2024. Marcorino is Neive’s “city vineyard” as it’s the only one planted between Neive’s upper part (Borgo vecchio) and the new part (Borgonuovo). Half hectare for Barbaresco DOCG with MGA designation and 0.25 ha for Langhe Nebbiolo. Steep slope facing South.
(3) Cottà MGA – A (210 – 230 m. a.s.l.) the largest of the 4 Cottà plots was planted first in 1978 with Dolcetto, Barbera and Freisa, then Nebbiolo (the so called Rosé clone CN111) was added in 1995 and Muscat in 1998. Also on a steep slope, facing West.
(4) Cottà MGA – B (250 – 260 m. a.s.l.) Nebbiolo for Barbaresco was planted in 1971 on the part that faces West (but on a milder slope than the A part). The other 2 vineyards in this plot, facing North-West, until 2021 were planted with Grignolino and then overgrafted to Pinot Nero.
(5) Cottà MGA-C (280 m. a.s.l.) this is the only plot on Cottà that’s at the other side of the hill, facing East. A small vineyard of Barbera planted between 1971 and 1978.
(6) Cottà MGA-D (230 – 240 m. a.s.l.) the second youngest Nebbiolo vineyard, planted in 2021 and “converted” to Barbaresco DOCG in 2024. Lighter in color soils, on a hill facing West.
A total of 0.72 ha of Taverna’s Nebbiolo for Barbaresco has a Cottà MGA designation.
